CPTT and the IEC 60870-5 family

The IEC 60870-5 family has been successively developed by the [ IEC ] (International Electrotechnical Commission) in the last years. National standard commitees, like the German [ DIN ] (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.), have adopted the standards as national standards.

The IEC 60870-5 family defines based on the five basic standards IEC 60870-5-1 (frame formats), -2 (link transmission procedures) -3 (structure application data), -4 (information elements) and -5 (basic application functions)
the companion standards IEC 60870-5-101, -102, -103 and -104.

The IEC 60870-5 protocol family is used widely throughout Europe.

IEC 60870-5-104

IEC 60870-5-104 is used as a general transmission protocol between a control system and substations (RTUs, Remote Terminal Units). It possesses general features within the context of SCADA applications.
The messages can only be transmitted through the internet protocol TCP/IP. Because TCP/IP is already a reliable transmission protocol, a link layer is not required.

COMPROTware:Testtool offers in this protocol:

  • IEC 60870-5-104 Ed.2.1 from June 2016 is implemented, additionally the security-related Application Layer Messages described in IEC 60870-5-7 resp. IEC 62351-5 are decoded.
  • Simulation of Controlling and Controlled Station.
  • Extensive state engine to implement protocols.
  • Controlling and Controlled Station simulation via TLS-secured TCP/IP connection according to IEC 60870-5-7 (IEC 62351-3).
  • Network Monitoring under MS Windows.
  • Interactive input of messages.
  • Different application oriented view formats for message traffic.
